TREE MAN

Interactive public art installation
Shenzhen, Singapore, Perth

Tree Man is a response to the digital-driven culture of contemporary times, a notion encapsulated visually through the sculpture’s screen-shaped head. The artwork emphasises and highlights the importance of humans connecting with and nurturing the environment. This is expressed through the Tree Man character encircling a sapling in his arms: providing sanctuary for the young tree and at the same time providing an inner sanctum or sanctuary for visitors.

The sculpture emits blue light — in reference to the blue light of our devices, which if mishandled, can be so detrimental to our circadian rhythms. Here-in lies the dilemma: our insatiable desire for technology is often damaging to us and the environment.

We must find the balance between the digital and the natural for ourselves and our world. And so, Tree Man with his digital head and mesmerising blue light, invites everyone into his little sanctuary to dwell on the balance we must strike between our natural and digital worlds - a new way of doing things.

Tree Man offers both an interior and exterior experience. Digital content and music are stimulated by people’s movement around and within the form. The sweep of our smaller Tree Man’s circular embrace includes a 4.5 metre immersive dwell space. In some locations, traditional native trees can be used. Throughout any Tree Man experience, visitor movement triggers sparse melodies on top of an overall dense forest-like track while the artwork’s colours morph and evolve.
