GIANT TREE MAN

Interactive public art installation
Melbourne

The presence and absence of light is critical to the experience of Tree Man, in that full spectrum light from the sun is the most natural and healthy form of light for human hormone levels and circadian rhythms. Exposure to blue light has increased dramatically in modern life — divorcing us from our usual patterns of bright days and dark nights, essential to melatonin and serotonin production.

Tree Man embraces a tree in an intimate expression of our need for all things natural, and the importance of maintaining and nurturing the delicate balance of our own bodies as well as the balance between the digital and the natural for ourselves and our world.

And so, Tree Man with his digital head and mesmerising light, invites everyone into his little sanctuary to dwell on the balance we must strike between our natural and digital worlds.

Tree Man responds to movement , shifting from blue to green to reflecting technological and environmental themes. Additionally, a soundscape of environmental sounds mimics the way the internet and social media is an archive or ‘recording’ of our lives as they are happening.
