ROCK MONK ORCHESTRA
Interactive Public Art Installation
Citypoint, London
The Rock Monk Orchestra is bringing deep resonance to Citypoint. This assemblage of wise little rocks in Zen formation cultivates mindfulness and concentration through music, recitation and chanting. Visitors will hear the warm tones and haunting vibration from a distance, enticing them into the middle of the group. Integrated pebble seats offer the opportunity to be one with the rocks and soak up the rhythmic harmonies.

In an ode to electric guitars, several rocks sparkle and shimmer with a sunburst sheen like electric guitars. City goers must slow down to navigate the stepping stones scattered throughout the Rock Monk Orchestra’s pebble garden. Warm, meditative musical tones wash over those congregated, while integrated pebble seats offer the opportunity to be one with the rocks and soak up rhythmic harmonies.
The movement of visitors progresses the overall score. Small ritual moments are offered by interactive buttons decorating the faces of several rocks like sacred markings. When a visitor presses one of these buttons it adds additional notes to the performance. In this way, the Rock Monk Orchestra is generative with an ever-developing composition that crescendos and changes in sync with crowd fluctuations and visitor contributions.
